About Espresso Compact
A real espresso setup for a small counter, compared.
Compact espresso machines are sold on bar pressure, and almost every listing claims 15 or 20 bar. That number is a pump rating, not what reaches the coffee, and it says nothing about the grinder you will need or the counter depth the machine takes. We compare the whole setup in a few clear rankings.
How we approach a comparison
Why this site exists
Twenty bars on every box
Amazon's espresso results repeat the same promises across hundreds of listings: barista quality, 20 bar, milk frother included. Sponsored machines crowd the top rows, and the dimensions that tell you whether it fits under a cabinet are buried in a spec table.
The site keeps three comparisons that cover a working setup: compact espresso machines, espresso grinders and machine cleaning products. The Breville BES870XL Barista Express tops the machine ranking at 9.5 out of 10, a publisher-assigned editorial score disclosed in the methodology.
The star average
Forty-five percent comes from the listing's Amazon average, discounted while the review sample stays under 50.
The size of the sample
Thirty-five percent comes from how many reviews exist, so long-standing products gain confidence over new arrivals.
The documented spec
Twenty percent rewards what the listing documents, such as a stated pump pressure, without treating it as brew quality.
On each product page
A verdict that tells you what to check
- How the score adds up
- Formula ratings show their three parts, and the machine scores set by the publisher are labeled as such.
- What is supported and what is not
- Strengths come with points to verify, like footprint, water tank access, portafilter size or grinder burr type.
- Guides for small kitchens
- Buying guides cover grinder pairing and descaling, and the rankings are updated as listings change.
What the affiliate link does not do
As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Commissions never decide a rating or a position on a list. The scores are editorial and differ from the stars shoppers see on Amazon.

Measure the counter, then compare
Check the width, depth and height you can give a machine, and whether you already own a grinder. Then open the comparisons and read each verdict.
