How espresso listings get scored here

Espresso marketing leans hard on one number — bar pressure — and our methodology treats it as exactly what it is: a seller’s maximum pump rating, not measured brew pressure at the puck. Every page here is a research summary assembled from the supplied Amazon catalog and published manufacturer documentation, not a physical test of any machine.

Publisher-assigned and formula-calculated ratings

On the Home Espresso Machines comparison, the displayed scores are manually assigned editorial assessments (publisher_assigned), not the output of the Amazon-review formula and not Amazon customer ratings or physical-test results. The publisher supplied 9.5 for B00CH9QWOU, 9.2 for B09X3WGJ3R and 7.5 for B078WMLXXG, and delegated the intermediate editorial choices: 8.7 for B08133HX34 and 8.1 for B0F3HH834M. These subjective choices preserve the existing shortlist order; no additional testing or measured advantage is claimed. Raw formula scores and Amazon review evidence remain unchanged. Other comparisons use formula_calculated ratings. The rating sort uses the displayed values.

Reading the bar figure honestly

Where the exact listing states a pump pressure in bar, the documented spec-fit score is 100 × min(stated bar / 20, 1), used as the documentation component of the review blend below, not the final displayed rating. Machines without an explicit bar figure — and all grinder, cleaning and accessory listings — use a documentation completeness score instead, with the automatic method documented here.

Shortlists for a small kitchen

Each comparison considers the complete eligible pool in its category before selecting five distinct references. Shortlist eligibility requires a captured Amazon average and positive review count. Known pack-size variants share one slot. Listings are ordered by editorial rating, descending; position reflects that documented rating, not a quality test. Grinder shortlists exclude machine bundles and filter-only titles, and guide cards use topic-specific product types — milk pitchers, portafilter baskets, descalers — where listing words establish relevance only, never compatibility.

Listing-stated dimensions and counter fit

The five ranked machines have exact-ASIN dimension citations, normalized to width × depth × height in inches. These are listing statements, not our measurements. Breville manufacturer pages present different dimension sets or axis labels from the Amazon listings; that discrepancy is disclosed rather than silently reconciled. Confirm dimensions with the seller for a tight space. Body dimensions exclude the working area needed for a separate grinder, a portafilter handle, tank removal, bean filling and steam-wand movement. No universal compactness cutoff or guaranteed cabinet fit is claimed. Dimension evidence does not change the publisher-assigned ratings.

Before you buy any machine

Verify the exact model and configuration, its dimensions on your counter, included accessories, the manual and the descaling instructions. A shared brand name or a nominal 58 mm basket diameter does not prove a part fits. We invent no specifications, no compatibility claims and no claims of measured quality.

Where Amazon reviews enter the score

For formula-calculated espresso and accessory ratings, the stored review evidence is combined as follows: 100 × [0.45 × (Amazon average / 5) × min(review count / 50, 1) + 0.35 × min(log10(1 + review count) / log10(1 + 5000), 1) + 0.20 × documentation score / 100], rounded to a whole number. Dividing that result by ten produces the one-decimal badge; the machine-page publisher assignments above remain separate. The 45% average term is discounted until the captured count reaches 50, while the 35% volume term grows logarithmically and the remaining 20% comes from documented attributes. Reviews of a machine do not measure the grind distribution of a separate grinder, and a descaler review does not establish compatibility with a boiler material. We retain the exact listing identity instead of moving those signals between products. Without a captured average and count, the catalog can show documentation-based scoring, but that does not meet the reviewed-shortlist eligibility rule. Automatic ties are retained, with raw score then slug determining stable order; neither the first position nor a decimal gap establishes better espresso. There is no rescaling to make a small kitchen shortlist look stronger. Brew temperature, shot consistency and steam recovery have not been measured by us.

Freshness rules

Amazon images expire at the supplied deadline or 24 hours after retrieval, whichever comes first, and expired images are removed. We publish no unverified prices, availability, discounts or customer ratings; refreshing source data is a separate maintenance task.

Publisher-assigned rating of the first-ranked listing

On each comparison page, the first-ranked listing may display a publisher-assigned editorial rating (publisher_assigned) instead of the formula result. Elias, the publisher, assigns this value manually; it is a subjective editorial judgment, not the output of the Amazon-review formula, not an Amazon customer rating and not a physical test result. The assigned value is between 9.1 and 9.4 and is stepped from the listing's unchanged formula score: 9.4 when the raw score is 88 or more, 9.3 for 84 to 87, 9.2 for 80 to 83 and 9.1 below 80. Where the formula already yields a displayed rating above 9.0, no exception is applied and the first-ranked listing shows the formula result. Every other listing on the page shows the formula result (formula_calculated). The exception replaces only the displayed rating on its named comparison; raw scores, Amazon review evidence, shortlist eligibility and order are unchanged. Each comparison page identifies its assigned rating in its method section, and the rating badge carries a data-rating-origin attribute naming its origin.

Spec-based ratings

Products without enough customer-review data still get our rating, built only from the exact Amazon listing. We score four criteria from 0 to 10: key specifications for the product type, stated build quality, warranty and certifications, how completely the listing documents what a buyer needs, and how clearly it states fit and compatibility. The rating runs from 4.5 to 8.5: 4.5 + the average of the four × 0.4. A thin listing lowers the rating but never below 4.5, because a short listing is not proof of a poor product; the 8.5 cap means that, without customer evidence, a product cannot outrank the review-backed picks of our comparisons. These are editorial judgments from documented facts, not hands-on tests, and they are labelled "Spec-based" wherever they appear.
